Erin Paterson’s “Amazing” Newfoundland family
Erin Paterson won bocce gold at her provincial Games in Newfoundland and Labrador last year, before making the journey to Alberta for the Special Olympics Canada Summer Games Medicine Hat 2026.
Following her across the country is a big cheering section of six family and friends, who travelled here from Erin’s home province as well as Wisconsin – including her sister Caitlin, whose enthusiasm was evident.
“When we heard that she won gold in Newfoundland, we immediately said, ‘OK, we’re coming out to the Games, wherever they are,’” said Caitlin. “It’s her first ones, and it’s so cool to see her get into something like this that she loves, that is competitive, and she just really has a good time with the team.”
Erin has high hopes for her first national Games, looking to replicate her success from last year. But she has a healthy perspective on how the competition may play out.
“For this year, for the Special Olympics Canada Summer Games, my goal this year is to get a gold medal,” said Erin. “But if I don’t, I just came here to enjoy everything. It doesn’t matter if I win or lose: I’m here to play for Team NL.”
Among her favourite aspects of the week, Erin mentioned travelling with her teammates and having her family’s support. Her sister, likewise, is enjoying being in Medicine Hat to cheer for Erin.
“It’s so cool to see Erin thrive in an environment like this,” said Caitlin. “I think sport is transformative, and it’s about that community, and it’s about being able to stretch your limits and still have fun.”
Sitting next to her family and teammates at Big Marble Go Centre, Erin talked about the motivation behind her goal of learning new things and securing another medal.
“I want to do it for my friends and family,” she said. “My family is amazing, they support me in every way, and they have just been a big help in my life.”
The last chance to watch and cheer at the bocce competition is Saturday, Aug. 14 – the final day of the Games.
